Founded in 1985, Choral Arts Ensemble (CAE) has established a reputation as one of the finest choral groups in the region. CAE performs a wide range of choral repertoire, with an emphasis on a cappella singing of music from the Renaissance to the twenty-first century. A nonprofit organization, CAE is governed by a Board of Directors with an annual budget of over $300,000, and managed by paid staff with offices at Assisi Heights. CAE is committed to its mission to inspire, educate, and enrich the community at large through outstanding choral performances.
Rehearsals are 6:00 - 9:00 pm on Tuesdays, beginning on September 8, 2020. Depending on current Covid19 guidelines, the group will rehearse outside in RESONATOR masks (designed for singing) for no more than one hour. We will meet as a whole if possible, but likely in 2-3 sub-groups in the 6-9 pm time slot. Friday dress rehearsals are also called the week of each concert series. In a normal season, there are 4 regular concert series, plus several non-season concert opportunities, including our annual benefit A Singing Valentine. For Fall/Winter 2020 our current plan is to perform one CommUNITY concert on Saturday, October 24, 2020, in a large indoor arena where all distancing guidelines and mask requirements can be met. This concert will be only 1 hour in length and the singers will be expected to memorize 30 minutes of repertoire. We believe this concert will also be available via live streaming - but that is yet to be determined. Our annual Christmas at Assisi concert series will be accomplished in small groups singing outdoors on the Assisi Heights grounds with attendees listening from their cars. Again, the concert repertoire will be memorized and less than 1 hour in length. Dates for those concerts are Saturday, December 12th, and Sunday, December 13th in the late afternoon.
Approximately 48 singers (SATB) will be accepted each year to sing with CAE. Auditions for solo opportunities will be held throughout the season as needed.
Scheduled auditions for Choral Arts Ensemble are (usually) held in May each year, although we will hear interested singers on a case-by-case basis throughout the year. Any interested adult singer in the SE MN region with musical background (preferably with experience singing the repertoire CAE presents) may audition; all singers must audition annually. The 10-minute audition consists of tonal memory and rhythm exercises, sight-singing, and range tests. Due to the current COVID-19 situation auditions will be held on the back deck at Rick Kvam's house in NE Rochester.
Auditions for the Fall/Winter 2020 Concerts will be August 18 - 20, 2020
